The Delegation of Scotland & Northern Marches

The Delegation of Scotland & the Northern Marches is part of the British Association of the Order of Malta covering the North of England and Scotland headed by a Delegate.

Lourdes

Each year the British Association takes a party of over 50 sick people to Lourdes for a week. The programme is intense and as well as religious services, times for quiet prayer and visits to the Grotto, there is also time to yourself. Other Pilgrimages of the Order and Companions take the sick to Walsingham (Norfolk), Holywell (Wales) and Scalan (Scotland).

Companions of the Order of Malta

The Order's hospitaller work would not be possible without the help of special volunteers, who support us with both time and money. These volunteers have their own organisation known as The Companions of the Order of Malta - a group that is open to all who wish to support the Order and its work. The Delegation is looking for more committed volunteers to join Companions so that more work much needed work can be carried out helping the sick, the poor and the disabled. Companions also carry out good works under their own initiative but in the name of the Order. To become a Companion, apply to The Secretary, Shotley Hall, Shotley Bridge, Consett, Co.Durham DH8 9TE

Calvert Trust on Kielder Water, Northumberland

Every second year the Companions organise a long week end at the Calvert Trust on Kielder Water in Northumberland. This is very much a holiday week end as the Calvert Trust lays on a splendid selection of activities for the disabled from mountain climbing to archery for the blind and with our own specialists we run swimming, or more accurately water activities, for the disabled in the indoor pool. And every year it organises a picnic for the disabled; in recent years this has been at the Castle Craig Clinic near Peebles.

Knights of Malta Ball

In Scotland our main annual fundraising event is the Knights of Malta Ball, held in Edinburgh in February/March each year. Apart from being a major event in the social calendar of Scotland, it raises much needed money in support of the works of the Order both within the Delegation area in other parts of the world.

Other Things we do...

The Order practices and defends the Catholic, the Apostolic, the Roman Faith against the enemies of religion and practices charity towards our neighbours.

We also look after the welfare of our members, we encourage prayer and organise various spiritual functions, Masses, Days of Recollection, Retreats and outings. Companions also attend these events. The Delegation runs long weekends on an occasional basis to places abroad, places with a connection to the Order or to Scotland. Recent visits were made to Salamanca, to Rome and to Malta, home of the Order for some 280 years, where we received spiritual talks from Cardinal O'Brien, from our senior chaplain, Archbishop Mario Conti, of Glasgow and from the Delegation Chaplain Mgr. Michael Regan.
